Patu Maire
A traditional Māori close-quarters weapon, patu were traditionally made from stone, hardwoods or whale jawbone.
This example is made from a beautiful piece of black maire, a very hard NZ native timber.
With this patu I wanted to stay close to the traditional shape of patu but add my own style. I wanted the beauty of the maire to speak for itself so I kept patterning to just the rekereke (butt) and focused on enhancing the form with subtle curves and lines. The kanohi (eyes) on the rekereke give off ruru (morepork) vibes and so can keep a look out.
The taura (rope) is natural hemp cord.
Wood: Black Maire
Taura: Hemp 5-braid
Length: 455mm
Width: 95mm
