The Artisan
Artisan
Noun - A craftsperson that makes distinctive, high-quality product in small quantities, often using traditional methods.
A.J. Prime is the Māori artisan behind Prime Artisan Knives.
He has been making knives since 2015 and in that time has established himself as one of the most reputable and skillful knife makers in the country.
Based in Te Tai Tokerau, A.J. is one of only a handful of full time bladesmiths in Aotearoa.
A.J. has developed a solid reputation for quality work. His uncompromising dedication to quality has seen his work become highly sought after and respected.
For him, the love of the process is the cornerstone of his craft. Often using reclaimed materials and historic techniques, A.J. breathes life into everything he creates. From hand-forging the blades through to sculpting and carving the handles, A.J. employs a wide range of skills and knowledge to create masterpieces. Each piece unique, each piece exquisite.
My original workshop in the Waikato.
“Fuck your good enough” is a phrase coined by Mareko Maumasi and Nick Wheeler, both renowned American bladesmiths, which in essence means never settle for good enough. This is a large driving force behind how I go about my craft.
