Patu Wōnati

$2,000.00

Description:

Carved from NZ-grown walnut.

Kanohi (face) either side with blade protruding as the arero (tongue).

Beef bone kanohi (eyes).

Haehae pākati whakarei.

Natural fibre cord with antler bead.

Blade width: 97mm

O/A length: 520mm

Patu are traditionally made from wood, as this is, and typically in a fairly orthodox shape. Not that there’s anything wrong with that. This patu is simply my own spin on it, taking queues from bladesmithing and shapes that please my eye. I also wanted the blade of the patu to be the arero of the figure in the handle. The wood used is NZ-grown walnut and is not particularly hard like pūriri or maire but I still wouldn’t want to be hit with it!
